Xingxiu School

Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils

The Xingxiu School is associated with Ding Chunqiu, a notorious martial-arts master whose methods and reputation make the school a source of danger even when it is not present in a scene. Its poison-based practices, including the use of poisonous weapons and the collection of venomous creatures, give it a distinctive material presence in the story. The evidence also links the school’s reputation to the fear and caution it inspires among other martial artists.

Reputation and Master

Ding Chunqiu is identified as the school’s master and as an unorthodox expert whom people in the martial world dread. His reputation rests on his readiness to commit evil and his capacity to kill, but also on his formidable martial skill: although his conduct makes him a figure of common condemnation, no one has been able to bring him under control. His relative absence from the Central Plains has, for a time, limited the scale of the danger associated with him.

His Energy-Dissolving Great Technique intensifies that threat. The technique is described as a method developed to destroy another practitioner’s internal energy, making it an especially grave taboo among martial artists. The school’s menace therefore combines conventional physical danger with an attack on the basis of an opponent’s martial ability.

Disciples and Practices

A'Zi’s connection to the school becomes clear when Xiao Feng recognizes her master’s identity and asks why she accepted Ding Chunqiu as her teacher. Xiao Feng knows that a disciple of Ding Chunqiu may possess many poisonous weapons; his knowledge turns what might seem like a simple encounter into a recognition of the school’s characteristic danger. A'Zi is surprised that he can identify both her master and the weapons associated with him.

The school’s practices also appear in the treatment of poisonous creatures. When Xiao Feng examines the wooden tripod carried with A'Zi’s belongings, he finds that it can be opened by turning its upper section. Inside, a scorpion and a centipede are fighting. He recognizes the arrangement as part of the Xingxiu School’s unusual method of gathering poisonous insects and creatures. He removes the two creatures, kills them, closes the tripod, and keeps it with A'Zi’s belongings rather than destroying the object she had struggled to obtain.

Techniques and Concealment

A'Zi’s way of feigning death offers another glimpse of the knowledge associated with Ding Chunqiu’s school. Xiao Feng identifies her stillness as the Chelonian Breathing Skill of the Old Fiend of Xingxiu. A'Zi explains that while she plays possum, her breathing and heartbeat stop and her eyes and ears are closed, leaving her unable to see or hear what happens around her. The technique can conceal her presence, but it also leaves her unaware of the people and conversation around her.

Together, the poisonous weapons, the tripod, and the breathing technique show a school whose methods extend beyond open combat. Its influence is conveyed through things a disciple carries, skills that hide her condition, and the knowledge needed to recognize both. The school’s reputation is thus not merely a name attached to Ding Chunqiu; it is a practical threat that shapes how others interpret A'Zi’s actions and equipment.
